A New Image for 'The Brewers': Burton Albion Unveils New Retro-Inspired Crest

To celebrate the historic milestone of its 75th anniversary, English League One club Burton Albion officially unveiled a brand-new club crest on July 5, 2025. Inspired by a vintage brass pin badge, the new crest features a minimalist roundel design, paying homage to the club's founding roots and traditions.
Burton Albion Football Club, nicknamed 'The Brewers', was founded on July 5, 1950, at the Town Hall in Burton upon Trent. The club is deeply rooted in the town, which is famous for its rich brewing history. Its journey from amateur leagues to becoming an established member of the English Football League embodies the values of hard work, courage, and integrity.

The new Burton Albion crest is presented as a classic and minimalist roundel. The design completely abandons the vibrant yellow shield of the previous crest, opting for a fundamental black-and-white appearance that gives it a more retro feel and greater versatility. At the center of the crest is the interlocking "BA" monogram, which was used in the club's early history and is taken directly from the core element of the old crest, ensuring brand continuity. The outer circle features the full club name, "BURTON ALBION," in a clear and strong typeface, creating a balanced and elegant composition.

The design inspiration for the new crest came from a vintage brass pin badge discovered by the club while researching its historical archives, symbolizing the ethos of "honouring our past, shaping our future." The club stated that the transition from a colourful shield to a minimalist roundel is a move to return to its origins and pay tribute to the club's 75-year journey. The crest was designed as a colorless framework to enhance its flexibility and versatility, allowing it to be adapted to various color schemes for different kits and other materials without conflict.
Compared to the yellow shield crest used for many years, the new crest is revolutionary in both its form and color strategy. The old crest was based on a bright yellow shield with high color saturation and strong visual impact. In contrast, the new crest opts for a return to a classic roundel and a monochromatic design, giving it a more distinguished and historic feel.
Despite the distinctly different visual style, the new crest is not a complete departure from tradition. Its core "BA" monogram is directly extracted from the central motif of the old shield crest, cleverly establishing a connection between the old and the new and ensuring the club's visual heritage is preserved.

The new club crest will be implemented across all of the club's digital channels and assets starting in July 2025. The first kit to feature the new crest is the 75th-anniversary edition home shirt. This kit also pays homage to history, adopting the halved amber and black design worn by the club in its first-ever match in 1950. The new crest is rendered in gold on the shirt, perfectly complementing the anniversary theme.
